Apple iPhone 8 and 8+ in 2017

Only the 5-inch iPhone 8 should have a glass back, wireless charging.

Another day, another contradicting iPhone rumor - when will it end? Well, next September is a pretty safe assumption.

Anyway, in today's batch of supposed specs for the future iPhone we have a 5-inch model that will be fitted with wireless (or rather, inductive) charging capability. Based on 'reliable sources' from Taiwan, Japanese blog Macotacara reports that only this 5-inch model will have a glass back thus enabling the inductive charging.

Just the other day another source claimed that all three models will be able to be charged wirelessly.

Continuing today's story, the source states that the wireless charger won't be included in the phone's package, but will instead be an optional accessory - nothing out of the norm, really. However, Apple will no longer be bundling the Lightning-to-3.5mm adapter - one generation is enough for the transition to Lightning or Bluetooth headphones, Apple must have figured.

Nothing but speculation here, but it's starting to look that there will be the 4.7" and 5.5" iPhone 8 and 8 Plus (or will it be 7s and 7s Plus) that will continue the path of the current models, while a dedicated (and likely more exclusive, read 'expensive') 5" anniversary model could be in the works with more distinctive features - wireless charging, OLED display, dual camera in a vertical arrangement. Just don't go quoting us on this one.

The New Concorde flying soon masterpiece

The original Concorde, a flying masterpiece, could zip from London to New York in a breakneck 3 hours and 30 minutes. For many people, it was a dream to experience faster-than-sound travel, and the prospect of cutting the seven to eight hour journey to half the time was enough to make even the most robust traveler giddy with delight. Aircraft manufacturer Airbus has been taking inspiration from this flying dream, and they have now won a patent for the next stage in speedy travel. And this monster goes faster and higher than ever before seen in commercial air travel.

One hour. That's how long London to New York would take in the planned hypersonic plane, called the “Ultra-rapid air vehicle” but dubbed Concorde 2.0. This new passenger aircraft would fly at up to four and a half times the speed of sound, Mach 4.5, compared to up to Mach 2.5 for the original Concorde.

Begin to play a game of Monopoly

Your friend gets to play using the normal rules. He starts the game with $1,500 in cash, and, every time he passes "Go," he gets $200. He uses two dice to move around the board.

You, however, only get $300 at the start of the game, and you get just $50 every time you pass "Go." You use one die to move around the board.

The two of you play for an hour or so. At that point, your friend has accumulated many properties, built several houses, and has over a thousand in cash.

You, however, are not doing so well. You have no houses, just two properties (and one is mortgaged to pay for last turn's rent), and your cash is $60.

You then proclaim that the game isn't fair. Your friend agrees. The two of you both start getting $200 every time you pass "Go" and you both use two dice to move around the board.

How long do you think it will take you to even up the game? Or will your friend continue to benefit from the lead he built based on the advantages he had for so long?

That, in a greatly simplified nutshell, is the economics of systemic inequality.

And whether that inequality is based on race or gender or sexuality or religion or some other factor, the effects of long-term, inherited disadvantages perpetuated over generations cannot suddenly be erased simply by giving everyone access to the same rules.

Female Werewolf

Werewolves have existed in folklore in one form or another for thousands of years, originating from proto-Indo-European mythology and later appearing in other cultures. The term "werewolf" means "wolf man" in Old English, similar to the "wolf skin" of Slavic or "wolf human" (lycanthrope) derived from Ancient Greek. Some were thought to shapeshift between forms on will, while others were believed to be cursed. A lesser known attribute of the witch hunts in Medieval Europe was the simultaneous persecution of those considered to be werewolves. Not a nice time to live.
The beautiful character Volchista is a werewolf, and uses her attractiveness to lure the giant wolf Vedrir into battle.

Cheetara Workout

When your body is the ultimate weapon and speed is your thing, muscle control is critical. The Cheetara workout is there to push you your main muscles, supporting muscle groups and tendons to the level where you can make them work for you.

What it works: Calves, lower abs, front hip flexors, core, glutes, lower back, hamstrings, obliques, abs, cardiovascular system, aerobic capacity (VO2 Max).

Instructions: Repeat each move with no rest in between until the set is done, rest up to 2 minutes and repeat the whole set again 3, 5 or 7 times depending on your fitness level.

What it works: Calves, lower abs, front hip flexors, core, glutes, lower back, hamstrings, obliques, abs, cardiovascular system, aerobic capacity (VO2 Max).

Make it better:  When performing High Knees aim to take your knees past your waist height. It challenges your front hip flexors and lower abs and helps you load critical muscle groups for speed.

Make it harder: Reduce rest time between sets to 60 seconds and challenge your aerobic capacity no matter what level you do this workout at.

Body types this can work for: Like most of our bodyweight workouts this will work for every body type. Ectomorphs with their lower body mass may find it a tad easier, but there's not much to it.

Perfect for: Speedsters who use their skills to overcome every obstacle in every situation. Plus anybody who is interested in adding a little more control to their bodies and a little more zap tot heir movements.

The Battle of Facebook and Google+ flame Wars

This social network has now hit 400 #million registered users and has 100 #million monthly active users according to a Google’s Vic Gundotra.

Some other facts and statistics about Google+ include:
--Males dominate its registered user population at 67%
--The average age is 28 years for males and 38 years for females
--Google+ users are #more technically savvy than Facebook users

[INFOGRAPHIC] - a bit old but some things still stand.

"Lately, there has been a lot of buzz about the competition between Facebook and Google+, so we thought we would lay all the facts out on the table.

With over 350 million active users, Google+ surpassed Twitter and is coming in at second place behind Facebook. Who will come out on top? And most importantly, which network is the most beneficial to your brand?

Both networks excel when it comes to building communities and encouraging engagement, but in very different ways.

Facebook is best for fostering personal relationships with friends and family.
On the other hand, Google+ excels at fueling common interests and finding intellectual matches, (since its audience is very technically oriented).

What if Facebook became an answer engine? What if each social networks became a wisdom-of-crowds database? What if computers  learnt to how to cure diseases, create cheap, renewable energy, and perform the jobs that employ most human beings?

The province of all this is exactly what's behind the application of semantic technologies. Facebook has face recognition software already in play (as does Google in Google+) but that's not enough. What is really needed is the power of Google's semantic search in a more contextualized way, dealing with a smaller but still incredibly large data set.

The players are Google (attempting to tame the web), Apple (within its ecosystem), Facebook (within ... well, Facebook) and Amazon within its own ecosystem.

Warmup & Stretching

During a workout we can all go from zero to hero and push hard but the safe way to train is to bring the body’s temperature up slowly and loosen up the muscles before we get to do anything serious. That’s what warmups are designed to do. Stretching, on the other hand, is done in order to improve overall flexibility. Once muscles have worked they are at their most compliant state and they let us stretch further than we normally would gaining more ground while we are at it.

Timing: We start with a warmup and then we finish our training session with stretching.

Warmups are critical to a better performance and fewer injuries but stretching is somewhat of an optional extra - we can do it, we should do it but not doing it will not cause any issues, most times.

Warmups

Most warmups don’t take very long, just two-three minutes or so. To benefit us the most a warmup should work the same muscles we will be engaging during the main workout - they should include lighter exercises or a toned down version of the training ahead.

Examples
If you are a runner, your best warmup is a light jog.
If you are doing martial arts training a warmup should also include a few light kicks and punches.
If you are doing bodyweight workouts basic body (neck, arms, torso, legs) rotations will get your blood flowing.

With bodyweight training we can do without an actual warmup if we use one of the sets to warmup and get into it, moving at a slower pace, jumping lower and moving slower.

The temperature of when and where you workout plays a difference. In winter our body keeps most of the blood flow away from our extremities so warming up will take longer. In summer with higher ambient temperatures, the body is already half-warmed up and our muscles are loose. Many Olympic athletes tend to ‘chase the sun’ for that reason training in Australia and California so they spend all year in a summer environment.

Stretching

Everyone can get flexible if they work at it. Some people have a natural gift for flexibility others have to struggle to gain every little bit but everyone can get there. It takes persistence and regular training and the muscles adapt and respond.

The best time to stretch is post-workout when our muscles are completely relaxed, thoroughly warmed up and capable of giving us the most stretch, easiest. When muscles are really well warmed up they exhibit a high degree of plasticity. That means that not only do they stretch but after stretching and cooling down they maintain an increased range of movement and display greater flexibility.

This is the reason why everyone should stretch: range of movement. Whether you are a boxer or a ballet dancer your sport will necessitate your muscles performing by working through a range of motion. Muscles that are tight and constricted tend to work against each other to perform the move. That means that energy which should be used in the move itself is actually soaked up by fighting against the muscles themselves and the supporting muscle groups. This leeches away power.

Obviously boxers and ballet dancers do different types of stretching and focus on different muscle groups but they stretch for the same reasons.

Stretching Pre or Post workout

When we stretch pre-workout muscle temperature is low and we have done nothing to warm up. So we are trying to force muscles that are stiff and tight to extend their range of motion. When forced this can cause microtears in the muscle itself which result in instability when performing and studies have shown that this can lead to injuries.

When we stretch post-workout our muscles are tired and they are thoroughly warmed up. Tired muscles have a lower relaxation point so they will stretch further with passive stretching, i.e. when an external force is applied on them, like when you are stretching with a partner who helps you get your thigh to your chest by pushing your leg against it while you are lying flat on your back. They will also stretch further with active stretching, where you use your body’s momentum and the movement of your limbs to make your muscles stretch.

Studies have shown that when your muscles are warmed up and you hold a stretch position for up to 30 seconds you can significantly increase your range of motion. This allows your body to increase its power without having to increase muscle mass.

By using a warmup before you exercise and a stretching routine after your workout you succeed in helping your muscles perform better, be more resilient, generate more power and be less prone to injury. These are all gains which help you achieve more with less effort and better results.

GTR 2015 Geneva Motor Show

Production-intent version of the McLaren P1 GTR to premiere at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show
The development programme for the most powerful and most exclusive McLaren model to-date has been stepped up over the winter months, with the limited edition McLaren P1™ GTR being put through its paces across Europe and the Middle East. Ahead of the start of production later this year, and the launch of the bespoke Driver Programme, the track-only model will make its global debut in production form at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show in March.

As testing continues, the McLaren P1™ GTR looks set to be one of the fastest to ever wear the famous McLaren ‘speed mark’. Through significant weight-saving measures and track-optimisation of the petrol-electric powertrain, McLaren P1™ GTR will boast a power-to-weight ratio increase in excess of 10 percent over the road-going model, to more than 700 PS per tonne. This has been achieved using motorsport-derived technology and expertise, with the track-only model completing thousands of kilometres of extreme testing at several UK and European locations, as well as a demanding testing schedule in the extreme heats of Bahrain and Qatar, with Chief Test Driver Chris Goodwin at the wheel. These tests have pushed the performance of the car to its limits, and have been designed to further enhance cooling and aerodynamics over the design concept previewed at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in the summer of 2014.

The dedicated development programme will continue at the relentless pace over the coming months to further tune the performance, aerodynamics, driving dynamics and handling balance to ensure the McLaren P1™ GTR lives up to the iconic ‘GTR’ title, made famous by the 24 Hours of Le Mans-winner 20 years ago. In the coming weeks, the McLaren P1™ GTR Driver Programme will get underway, with drivers invited to the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, UK to start the journey which will see them experience some of the world’s most iconic racing circuits behind the wheel of one of the most extreme limited-run track cars ever built.

Nature, in the broadest sense, is equivalent to the natural, physical, or material world or universe. "Nature" refers to the phenomena of the physical world, and also to life in general. It ranges in scale from the subatomic to the cosmic.
The word nature is derived from the Latin word natura, or "essential qualities, innate disposition", and in ancient times, literally meant "birth". Natura was a Latin translation of the Greek word physis (φύσις), which originally related to the intrinsic characteristics that plants, animals, and other features of the world develop of their own accord. The concept of nature as a whole, the physical universe, is one of several expansions of the original notion; it began with certain core applications of the word φύσις by pre-Socratic philosophers, and has steadily gained currency ever since. This usage continued during the advent of modern scientific method in the last several centuries.
Within the various uses of the word today, "nature" often refers to geology and wildlife. Nature may refer to the general realm of various types of living plants and animals, and in some cases to the processes associated with inanimate objects – the way that particular types of things exist and change of their own accord, such as the weather and geology of the Earth, and the matter and energy of which all these things are composed. It is often taken to mean the "natural environment" or wilderness–wild animals, rocks, forest, beaches, and in general those things that have not been substantially altered by human intervention, or which persist despite human intervention. For example, manufactured objects and human interaction generally are not considered part of nature, unless qualified as, for example, "human nature" or "the whole of nature". This more traditional concept of natural things which can still be found today implies a distinction between the natural and the artificial, with the artificial being understood as that which has been brought into being by a human consciousness or a human mind. Depending on the particular context, the term "natural" might also be distinguished from the unnatural, the supernatural, or synthetic.

How to Train Like a Super Saiyan

There is training and then there is Saiyan training. At it's core there is a simple fact: no matter how strong you are there is always a way to raise your power levels and advance to the next level. You transform and then continue your transformation when you constantly push yourself to the absolute limit... and then go beyond it. Saiyan training doesn't just take you out of your comfort zone physically, it challenges you mentally as well. Training like Goku takes a lot, a lot of hard work... and serious ballz.

There is only one rule: the moment you can do something raise your standards - that's the key to training on a Super Saiyan level. If you can do 100 sit-ups, go 200. If you can do 100 push-ups, go 200. If you can run 10K go faster, go longer, run with a heavy vest Goku-style. Turn your every activity into a challenge and never, ever take shortcuts.

Go 100 times Earth's gravity

Perform an exercise in slow motion to force already tired muscles to work in an almost isometric fashion really loading them along their entire length.

When doing push-ups perform them as slowly as you can. By performing them in slow motion you force already tired muscles to perform in an almost isometric fashion really loading them along their entire length. Go as low as you can towards the floor, ideally until your nose touches the floor and then come up. Repeat it until your muscles really cannot do it any more. You will get a lot of muscle shake in your arms as you do this. Stick with it - it’s going to be worth it.

Go double reps

Pick your favourite workout routine and double the reps per set (and if you can take it, double them again). Goku's famous "10,000 push ups" challenge is designed to push the Saiyan warrior past all of his limits. Start small, double it and keep on doubling it until you hit a limit you can call a target to beat.

Go the extra mile

Get to as many places as you can on foot for a day (or a week). Carry your groceries yourself in a basket instead of putting them in a shopping cart, don’t use the elevator for a week and take the stairs everywhere. Whenever you see an opportunity to choose a harder route - take it. Goku runs rings round King Kai's planet to warm up and cool down, you only have to go round the block once (or twice).

Go aerobic

Combine whatever training you are currently doing with a regular run each day. It doesn’t matter how far you go as long as you run every day and run at your top speed for as long as you can. Run uphill - find uneven routines for your runs, the more you have to climb up - the stronger you’ll get. Goku had to climb Korin Tower to get into some kind of reasonable shape, you can surely manage an extra run.

Go combo

Pick a combination from martial arts and do it again and again and again until your body flows in the movements and you can feel your muscles thrumming every time you perform it. Combo example: jab+jab+cross combo, double turning kick, backfist + turning kick, double punch + side kick. Goku puts together a mixture of martial arts moves and practises them again and again, until he is pitch-perfect.

Go Super Saiyan

Pick three workouts and do them back-to-back. Each workout places emphasis on a different muscle group. By picking three different ones you are forcing your body to work on different aspects of your fitness level and athletic ability. Remember that strength comes as a response to a need, not a desire. Your body needs to feel that it is absolutely necessary to become strong, in order for it to respond and adapt.

Go super static

Set a timer and every hour sit with your back against the wall or hold a plank for as long as you can each time. Super Saiyan training is a way of life not a casual workout.

Go extra weight

Go through the day wearing ankle weights. Apart from driving (and swimming, of course) do all your normal everyday activities wearing ankle weights. This adds an extra load on your leg muscles as well as your body, forcing it to adapt all day. Do this for two days in a row then take the weights off to let your leg muscles recover. You will instantly feel the difference. Goku fought in the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament with weighted clothes so he could level up.

Do all this and you too will have energy levels of Over 9000.

Becoming an accidental hero deserter or role model

Disconnecting yourself is a truly strange feeling, especially when you've got followers. Now that Google+ has been around for quite some time, I've had the opportunity to engage with it and the people on it in varying degrees of intensity. From checking it all the time to not checking for months, my interest and availability has ebbed and flowed. What I struggle with is A) whether I view this platform as a place for fun or more like a job and B) people's expectations of me.

What I've found is that you can accidentally become someone's role model, enemy, hero, or biggest deserter. Every way someone paints you in their head will affect you. They will project their expectations on you, imagine themselves as more meaningful than they actually are to you, or think that they have a close connection to you because they've been following your posts. This is the part that freaks me out the most and something I'm written about before. People can be truly hurt by you when you haven't done anything.

My actions affect people in unintended ways. I can ruin someone's day by not checking notifications. If I miss someone's important life event because I'm out of town, that person can think I'm heartless. When I took some time off here on Google+, I felt the need to tell people. It's another obligation, but that's one I think is reasonable.

There are so many people here that I still deeply care about. Even if we don't talk every single day, there are many, many people that I would help out if they reached out to me. It's possible that I'm projecting my attitude about taking a step back onto other people, but I think the lesson I'm learning is that I can't be responsible the way I make people feel sometimes - even if they've helped me in an online capacity. When you someone thinks you owe them something you don't, it gets messy. All you can really do is apologize and move on.

Facebook Changing Its News Feed Algorithm

Facebook’s Changing Its News Feed Algorithm Again (4:32): Facebook has announced it will once again adjust its algorithm (on January 1, 2015) to show fewer posts from brand pages that appear to be “overly promotional.” According to this analysis from Ars Technica, Facebook made this decision after surveying users and learning that “hard sell” ads really aggravate them. Robert and I discuss what this latest move means to marketers, and who it’s likely to hurt the most.

Ministering Cross-Culturally

So, I‘m reading this thought-provoking book called Ministering Cross-Culturally by Lingenfelter and Mayers. It‘s about using the Incarnation as a model for cross-cultural relational evangelism. Obviously, I‘m finding it very relevant to my situation.

A lot of the book is about recognizing that just because a culture perceives something as right or wrong doesn‘t mean it necessarily is. For example, a meeting runs over and the group waiting to use the facility next rings a bell to demand the turnover. In Germany the group running late is at fault and considered very rude and the bell ringers are right. On the island of Yap, it would be exactly the opposite. The bell ringers would be very rude and the group running over innocent.

Personal example: I perceive selfies to be immature, vain, and narcisistic (sp?) Asia thinks they‘re fun and a way to bond and connect. I prefer to take unposed shots of what‘s happening. Asia thinks picture-taking is an event happening in and of itself.

So, yesterday when I ran into two 8th graders from
#寧中 hanging out at 7-Eleven taking selfies together I resisted the urge to tease them about not having anything better to do and asked them if I could take some with them. Honestly, because of the insider-outside mentality being so strong here in #金門 I was expecting them to say no or at least be reluctant about it. But they were delighted, discussed at length what template to use, chose 4 poses and reshot several times to get it just right.

I still don‘t like selfies, but I sure did like the connection we had.

Microsoft Closes a Few Barn Doors

Two snake oil "security" actions, detecting whistle blowers and fixing a two decade old bug.  People who use Windows obviously don't care about security of any sort, so I wonder why Microsoft bothers.

Unable to fix garbage like Sharpoint on their own, Microsoft is buying Aorato, a security snake oil company.  Perhaps the NSA's plan to fire all the sysadmins did not work out so well and they want some assurance from Microsoft that the next Manning or Snowden will be detected.  No telling, but it will make life more miserable in government offices and big dumb companies that still fool around with Windows.  Sharepoint does not have reasonable rules for handing things out and the kind of people who use Microsoft hate their employees.  What's to do?  Spy more on your employees, of course.

Techrights also notes the poor press coverage of an ancient SSL bug Microsoft had.  Compare that to Heartbleed?  Nah, everyone expects Microsoft to suck.

Lake Garda VeronaI taly

Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy, is a precious jewel of nature, and simply breathtaking. The great expanse of water is divided morphologically into two parts. The narrow northern part is flanked by steep mountains, which create the aspect of a wild fjord, while the southern part fans out into a broad shallow basin on which the long, slender peninsula of Sirmione sits.
Lake landscape, alpine atmosphere, colors and flavors of the Mediterranean: these are the elements that define the Lake Garda and make it a unique area.
Medieval villages, castles, streets and harbors are the typical scenarios encountered on the Verona side of Lake Garda
This large body of water fails to fascinate those seeking tranquility in a relaxing walk by the lake, but also the more sporty with proposals for Nordic walking, hiking, above all, windsurfing, sailing and kite surfing. For families and children, there are numerous entertainment venues, such as theme parks Gardaland and above all, with its world of rides and fairy tale.

Modeling Magnetism Mighty Jupiter

Jupiter's magnetosphere is the largest structure inside our solar system (excluding the Sun of course). Jupiter has a rather strong magnetic field which is similar to Earth but about 10 times stronger.

To generate a magnetic field a planet needs a conducting fluid. Earth has molten iron core which does this job, while Jupiter has something called "metallic hydrogen". Theoretical and computational studies show that at the enormous temperature and pressure inside Jupiter hydrogen transforms into a conducting fluid state (hence the name "metallic" hydrogen). This should happen gradually as we go inside Jupiter, i.e. the fluid in Jupiter becomes more and more conducting as we go deeper and deeper.

You need to understand a small concept for the following part to make some sense. Good conductors (like metals) interact with magnetic fields while insulators (like plastic) do not.

When you look at Jupiter through telescope you will easily notice the "bands" of very strong east-west winds. This windy region does not interact with Jupiter's magnetic field because it is an insulator (like plastic or sand). But keep in mind that as we go inside Jupiter the fluid gradually becomes conducting, so at some depth these strong winds should start interacting with magnetic field. Very deep inside Jupiter, however, we have many reasons to believe that such winds can not exist.

Modelling the interaction of strong winds and inner magnetic field means modelling the highly conducting deep region of Jupiter as well as the outer surface layers where fluid starts to behave like an insulator. This was not possible in the past due to limited computational horsepower.

Recently, my colleagues simulated a model which does exactly this. These simulations are highly complex and take months on supercomputers! The image attached below shows how the magnetic field (grey tubes) looks like inside the simulation (a model Jupiter). The colours represent the magnetic field strength on various surfaces. In the very deep the magnetic field looks like mushed noodles and they come out near the poles of Jupiter. The interesting part is in the region which I have marked with a black arrow.  These grey tubes are trying to wrap around "Jupiter". This is because fast winds in this simulation are trying to go inside but magnetic field doesn't want that. In the outermost part of the simulation fluid is insulating and winds exist because it doesn't care about magnetic field. In the innermost part of the simulation fluid is highly conducting and it strongly interacts with magnetic field which kills these winds.

Twisty things happen when the fluid is not so conducting but not so insulating either. Here both winds and magnetic field reach a truce. In this region magnetic field wants to stay more-or-less parallel and winds also want to flow and wrap around. In this process of tug-of-war, magnetic field gets stretched like rubber bands and the strength of the winds gets reduced. This interesting feature was never seen in earlier simulations.

The awesome part is that +NASA's  Juno spacecraft due to arrive on Jupiter in 2016 will be able to detect these features in Jupiter's magnetic field if they exist! Confirmation from Juno will help us a lot in modelling magnetic fields in exo-planets and stars.
